All-State Team | Double A Playoff Predictions:
The Jefferson District welcomes a new member to
the fold in 2009 as the Goochland Bulldogs move up from single A to join the
Charlottesville-centric district. Last season, the Monticello Mustangs claimed
their second consecutive district title and advanced all the way to the Division
3 semifinals before losing out to eventual state champion James Monroe in
Fredericksburg. Both Louisa and Orange finished with identical 7-3 records and
barely missed out on the playoffs. However, with region II expanding its
postseason to six teams per division, both will be looking to make sure they
don't miss out again. Rounding out the district, Charlottesville, Fluvanna,
Western Albemarle and William Monroe will all look to improve, with Fluvanna and
William Monroe welcoming new head coaches in 2009.

POSITIONS OF STRENGTH
A new coaching staff is in place in Palmyra, led by former Monticello assistant
Rodney Redd. The Flucos return several key players, most notably quarterback
Ryan Foster. He'll have a solid offensive line in front of him, with seniors
Jamie McCloud and Ches Harlowe returning and the Flucos are
excited about wide receiver D.J. Burton, who has great speed and could be
a playmaker this fall. Defensively, linebackers Tyler Denby and Willy
Crawford, the latter of whom took last season off but was one of the leading
tacklers on the team in 2007, should be penciled in as starters. Up front,
Chris Denby anchors the line, while Kedarrius Bruce is the leader in
the secondary.
QUESTION MARKS
The Flucos have had high hopes for several years in a row, but have not been
able to turn those hopes into winning seasons since 2001, and are just two years
removed from a winless campaign. There is plenty of senior leadership in the
program, but they must adjust to the new systems put in place by coach Redd.
Winning early would be a big positive for Fluvanna's confidence and could put
them in position to compete for the district.
