Enright Silences Miller School

Steward rode the arm of junior Nic Enright to defeat Miller School 2-0 to win the first State baseball championship in school history.

"God has been so good to us it and our program and our guys know that," Steward School head coach Bruce Secrest said. "So when we won today, it wasn't just this group but nine years of teams before. That's what makes it so special."

Enright struckout 10 while allowing only two hits in a complete game shutout. "I felt the bigger the situation the better I'll perform," Enright said. "I did everything I wanted to do today."

Enright also played a part in the offense after staring the fourth inning with a single. Sophomore catcher Dan McCarthy squared to bunt on the first pitch fouling it off before smashing a double down the left field line scoring the pinch runner from first.

"We put the bunt on for the first pitch and the Lord just said you don't need him to bunt you need him to hit," Secrest said. "Dan is a good fastball hitter and he turned on it."

Steward School added a second run thanks to three hit batters with Craig McClain driving in a run after getting plunked.

Enright did the rest as he overpowered the Miller school lineup with a steady stream of fastballs. He seemed to get stronger as the game went on.

"I was just attack, attack, attack," Enright said about having a 2-run lead. "I just wanted to throw first pitch strikes and then try to get them with the off speed and it worked."
