Eagles Forge Ahead to State's

6A-South Region Tournament Semifinals:
Final - - #1 Colonial Forge 85, #1 Patrick Henry-Roanoke 81

Prior to the 6A-South Region Tournament semifinals, the talk in the stands at the Siegel Center centered around how well the Colonial Forge Eagles played in their game with Cosby two nights before. Could they repeat that performance or make one even better? They didn't, but played well enough to hold off a dynamite perimeter shooting attack from Patrick Henry to send the Patriots back to Roanoke for the year in an 85-81 duel.

The GREEN jumped out to a 16-12 lead in the first quarter on the offensive performance of sophomore Carion Eaton's 7 points off the bench and junior Jaylen Franklin's 5 points. The biggest problem for the team early was fouls were lopsided against them, enjoyed by the Patriots 5 to 2 halfway through the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Forge spread out the offense, building a 36-27 lead at the break, getting TJ Flood, Marco Haskins and Isiah Williams involved. At the break, if you were wearing GREEN, you had to feel pretty good about what was happening in front of you.

The second half, the Patriots made their run, in the form of long range shooters Tyrus Esworthy (17 pts. on the night) and Christian Kirchman (28 pts.). Several of Kirchman's 3 pointers were from Spotsylvania in just a ridiculous shooting display.

The Forge countered that by going inside to junior Winston Burgess, who had all 16 of his points in the second half, spending a good portion of the first half in foul trouble. The Eagles got the lead up to 18 early in the third quarter but after the "BULLS-EYE" Show by the Patriots, they held on in the final frame and put it away from the free throw line. The Eagles shot 17 for 21 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, and 38 of 48 on the night.

The win gives the Eagles a bid to the State Tournament for the first time in school history on the hardwood. The Forge has joined Mountain View as the only Stafford County schools to reach the state's biggest dance. They take on Landstown (22-4) for the region title on Friday night at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond.

IN THE PAINT: The big arena and brighter lights didn't seem to bother either team on Wednesday night. Colonial Forge went to work from the opening tip and got the job done. When they got off the bus, the players took in the sights of the Siegel Center. At times, it looked like a tour going by as the players walked around the upper level of the arena before sitting down to watch the girls game from behind the bench.

Milestone Man: Colonial Forge junior 6-foot-4 shooting guard Marco Haskins scored his 1,000th point of his career in the victory.
