Mason Returns

Frank Mason's high school career at Petersburg High School reach almost legendary status and he will go down as one of the best basketball players to come out of the Petersburg area. When he played his final game at William Lawson Jr Gymnasium most believe that would be the last time he would play in front of the fans that adored him.

The annual William Lawson Classic afforded Mason one final chance to play in his High School gym.Massanutten, the current team for the Kansas commit was matched the 12th ranked prep school in the nation, Queen City Prep out of Charlotte, NC in what was advertised as a homecoming.

"I knew I had a chance (to play in Petersburg) but I didn't expect it to come this early," Mason said. "Coach and I talk about it and they made it happen."

The 2012 Central Region and Central District Player of the Year, Mason averaged 25.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 3.0 steals per game in leading his team to a 29-2 overall record and a state title game. He finished his career with 1,901 points.

While Mason did not hit one of his signature 3-pointers, he did show glimpses of his immense talent with his ball-handling skills and overall playmaking abilities. What was the best thing about coming back home?

"What was great was playing in front of all the fans, my family, coaching staff and the City of Petersburg," Mason said. "It was more excitement than a regular game. I was just ready to play in front of the crowd.""

Mason said playing for Massanutten around other D1 talent has improved his game. He has four teammates who have committed to D1 schools in Deandre Burnett (Miami), Damonte Dodd (Maryland), Garland Owens (Boston College), and QJ Peterson (VMI).

"It's getting me ready for the next level," Mason said. "It's better experience and just great competition everyday. I'm distributing the ball more and being more of a leader and being more vocal on the court."
