The accolades are starting to pile up for St Christopher senior Marshall Hollerith who was selected to the VISAA All-State Honorable Mention and VISAA All-Prep football teams. Recently Hollerith was selected for a special honor when he received the prestigious Bill Dudley Scholarship Foundation award which is given annually to only one Richmond area High School football athlete.
"My coach (Michael Turner) told me he was nominating me for the Dudley Award," Hollerith said. "When I found out I was selected, I felt extremely honored."
The Bill Dudley Scholarship Foundation, formed in the fall of 1991, began fund-raising and awarded the first scholarship in 1993. In total, over $30,000 in scholarships have been awarded through the foundation. The scholarship winners must distinguish themselves based on academic performance, extra-curricular & community activities, financial need and athletic achievement.
Hollerith scored 11 touchdowns this season while adding 395 rushing yards and 102 receiving yards from his fullback position. The two-time All-Prep League performer also had 32 tackles as an inside linebacker in 2012. For his career, Hollerith logged 1,301 all-purpose yards and 23 TDs, with 114 tackles, eight forced fumbles and eight recovered fumbles. Hollerith is also a wrestling All-American and captained the football and wrestling team this year.
He says his favorite football moment was a win over his arch rival. "My favorite memory from my high school football career was beating Collegiate in front of 7000 fans at the University of Richmond football stadium my junior year."
Academically, he's just as distinguished: Chairman of the Honor Council, UVA Book Award Recipient, 4.3 GPA, 2090 SAT (of 2400), Spanish National Honor Society, AP Scholar, along with many other honors and service ventures.
"Marshall is as fine a young man as I have encountered as an educator," football coach Michael Turner said. "His character as a person and his dedication as a high-achieving student-athlete are unparalleled in my experience."
