Double A Player of the Week

Each week, we'll take a look at the top performances from the weekend in AA football, headlined by VirginiaPreps.com's AA Player of the Week. Nominations are open on each region's message board, starting Saturday mornings, so if we miss somebody, make sure you put deserving players in the mix on the message boards.

Week Five Player of the Week

In last week's top ten AA Games of the Week article, I figured the #2 game was going to be a shootout thanks to several offensive stars on both sidelines. However, the game turned into a first-half rout thanks in part to a dominating half of football for the week five player of the week. James Monroe turned four early Eastern View turnovers into a 35-0 first quarter lead and running back Ethan Preston scored three of those touchdowns (from 49 yards, 12 yards and 80 yards) and added a fourth touchdown from 20 yards out in the second quarter to give the Yellow Jackets a 54-6 halftime lead. It was not the game that most envisioned prior to kickoff and Preston's four touchdowns and 184 yards rushing on 10 carries earned him a break in the second half and VirginiaPreps.com AA Player of the Week honors.

Other Notable Performances

The Magna Vista trio of quarterback Harvey Taylor (428 yards passing, 4 TDs; rushing TD) and receivers Deshaun Penn (6 catches, 216 yards, 2 TDs) and Jalen Hayden (5 catches, 193 yards, 2 TDs) were magnificent in the Warriors' 35-28 win over Pulaski County.

There were several huge rushing efforts on the night, with six players rushing for over 200 yards:

Jarrett Moon from Staunton River ran for 319 yards and four touchdowns in the Golden Eagles' 39-15 win over James River (Buchanan).

Sherando beat Jefferson (WV) with Joseph Ojo running for 249 yards and three scores in the win.

Kettle Run's Josh Tapscott ran for 230 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown and added a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the 51-12 win over Fluvanna.

Atem Ntantang ran 32 times for 221 yards in Woodgrove's win over Dominion.

Quarterback Randall Jones helped Rustburg beat E.C. Glass for the first time with 214 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

Tabb's Andrew Junio scored all three Tiger touchdowns in their 21-20 upset of Poquoson and had 206 yards on the night.

In the air, Brookville's Kendall Becraft threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns in the Bees' win over Jefferson Forest. Heritage (Leesburg)'s Austin Nelson threw for 272 yards, three scores and ran in a touchdown as the Pride moved to 4-1 with a win over Potomac Falls. Jake Durden makes another appearance here with 255 yards passing and four touchdowns in Harrisonburg's win over Turner Ashby.

Quarterbacks who were strong on the ground this week include:

Kent Henry from Western Albemarle, who threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns in their win over Spotswood.

Dylan Horne from R.E. Lee (Staunton) ran for 112 yards and two scores and threw for 154 and two touchdowns.

Jevontae Parrish from Heritage (Lynchburg) led the Pioneers to a 42-0 win over Liberty with 150 rushing yards, 3 rushing touchdowns, a passing touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Harrisonburg's Weylin Holmes caught three passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns and returned a punt for a score, as well.

Northside's Tyler Fisher caught 3 passes for 103 yards and two scores as the Vikings beat Salem 23-17. Marcus Finney from Heritage (Leesburg) (10-130, TD) and Austin Ellis from Western Albemarle (6-104 and a fumble recovery) also went over the century mark receiving.

More big games for running backs: Southampton's Saiquan Mason ran for 175 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Park View (South Hill). Liberty (Bealeton)'s Anthony Budd ran for four scores in the win over Charlottesville. Trevor Bostic added to a strong start with 190 yards and two scores for Broadway in their win over Waynesboro. Isaac Robinson led Monticello to a 41-37 win over Louisa with 180 yards and four touchdowns. Sam Wright had another big game for Cave Spring with 184 rushing yards and four total touchdowns.

Three touchdown nights: Robbie Hiser, Grafton; Devon Johnson, Richlands; Reece Kingery, Cave Spring; Connor McGinty, Lafayette; Andre Mealy, Louisa; Thomas Smith, Lafayette; Ling Zheng, Rockbridge County

Millbrook kicker Derek Davis kicked the game-winning field goal in the Pioneers' 20-17 overtime win over Fauquier, his second of the night.

Finally, Grafton's Dylan Bartells did a little bit of everything, running for 136 yards and a touchdown and returning a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown for the Clippers.
