VirginiaPreps Class of 2011 Top 20 Football Prospects | VirginiaPreps.com | last sorted on 9/4/2009

2011 RankPosHt/WtSchools
1Dominique Terrell
Manassas (VA) Osbourn Park
  ATH5-11/175list
Terrell, DominiqueThe top-ranked prospect in the Commonwealth put up huge numbers as a sophomore in 2008 by rushing for 920 yards (8.6 yds/carry) and throwing for another 696 yards with 15 touchdowns earning first team all-region honors as a kick returner for the Yellow Jackets. Though his top asset is likely his 4.4 speed, Terrell earns wide praise for his no-fear approach to the game and his ability to make big plays when most needed. It's rarely fair to a prospect to make comparisons to an already established player but numerous sources have called him "the closest thing in Virginia to Percy Harvin since Percy Harvin."

Preseason All-State Team:   Double A   |   Triple A

2Melvin Robinson
Annandale (VA) Annandale
  WR6-3/210list

The Northern Region first team selection in 2008 earned his spot by catching 44 passes for 1,130 (25.6 yds/catch) and 12 touchdowns as he totaled over 100 yards receiving in seven of the Atoms ten games. In Annandale's 28-7 victory over South County which clinched the Patriot District championship and a playoff spot for the Atoms, Robinson hauled in three catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns. With impressive size, hands and athleticism (Robinson is a standout basketball player as well), there's little doubt that two more years of development will make him an impact player early on the college scene.
3Landon Turner
Harrisonburg (VA) Harrisonburg
  OL6-4/294list

With near college-ready size already, Turner adds an impressive mix of size, strength and athleticism to the gridiron where he plays with a mean streak reminiscent of old school power football linemen who drive defenders off the ball from snap to whistle. How impressive is he? Turner didn't even play his sophomore season due to injury yet still has drawn the attention of most Division I college programs east of the Mississippi. He'll have the added benefit of constant tutoring throughout the recruiting process from both his father and his uncle who each played at West Virginia.
4Curtis Grant
Richmond (VA) Hermitage
  LB6-3/222list
Grant, CurtisACC schools starting unofficially offering Hermitage linebacker Curtis Grant as soon as they started contacting him because the local schools knew that the Panthers standout would be getting national attention soon enough (likely starting this Fall) because Grant brings everything to the linebacker position that colleges seek -- size, the ability to run and a physical nature. After a Charlottesville combine, Rivals.com Analyst Mike Farrell called Grant a "massive linebacker with great length and terrific athleticism." Once colleges can begin officially tendering scholarships come September 1, Grant's offer sheet will also have great length and will include a terrific list of programs.
5Clifton Richardson
Newport News (VA) Menchville
  ATH6-1/195list
Richardson, Clifton The Menchville athlete is the most versatile prospect in the state from the Class of 2011 after having lined up at one time or another at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, linebacker, cornerback and safety for the Monarchs while accounting for 1,026 yards and thirteen touchdowns in 2008. With 4.4 speed, Richardson will rank as one of the speediest prospects in the Commonwealth and combines a winning attitude with a strong competitiveness which is why he has already drawn offers from ACC, Big East, and SEC schools.
6Lafonte Thourogood
Virginia Beach (VA) Ocean Lakes
  ATH6-2/220list
Thourogood, LafonteIn his first year as a starter, Thourogood led his team to a 12-1 mark as the Dolphins did not lose until meeting Oscar Smith in the Eastern Regional championship game 28-21. Already a seriously dangerous runner, the rising prospect has spent a number of hard hours in the offseason getting bigger, stronger, faster and improving upon his passing mechanics and has emerged from the pack as the one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the mid-Atlantic region. The cousin of current Virginia Tech Hokie Marcus Davis, Thourogood lacks the same size but matches the athleticism giving him the versatility to play virtually any skill position on either side of the ball at the college level.
7Caleb Taylor
Hampton (VA) Phoebus
  LB6-0/215list
Taylor, CalebA physical linebacker who came into his own late in the Phantoms 15-0 season in 2008, Taylor walked off the Lane Stadium turf in December as arguably the best defensive player on a unit that recorded nine shutouts last season. He carried that momentum into the offseason where he stood out at numerous events including an MVP award-winning appearance at the NUC combine held at Oscar Smith during the Spring. Recruiting attention form him has already gone national and, with two years worth of growth, maturity, and on-the-field development, Taylor will have the option of picking virtually any program in the country.
8Jay Whitmire
Alexandria (VA) T C Williams
  OL6-6/287list
Whitmire, JayAlready carrying college size, Whitmire is going to catch the eye of every college recruiter in his area not only because of his height, weight and solid build but also because he carries it so well. He's a two-way player who makes an impact on both sides and, when football season ends, he takes to the basketball court. An eventual four-year starter for the Titans, Whitmire brings a number of skills to the game complementing his size as he works well with his hands, plays with an explosive and aggressive nature and has enough athleticism that he lines up at tight end during the summer 7 x 7 passing competitions. Having already been approached by a number of Big East, ACC, and SEC programs, Whitmire will be a highly coveted recruit from the 2011 class.
9Ronny Vandyke
Lorton (VA) South County
  DB6-3/185list

Already holding an offer from Virginia Tech and drawing interest from schools nationwide, Vandyke stands out as yet another versatile big-time athlete from the Class of 2011 as his height and frame will allow him to line up at virtually any skill position on either side of the ball. His 4.5 speed is a major plus and as more and more colleges find the fairly new school in the Northern Region, more and more offers will come in. Early comparisons in on Vandyke suggests that he is similar to current Virginia Tech Hokie Kam Chancellor.
10Anthony Harris
Chesterfield (VA) Lloyd C Bird
  ATH6-3/180list

The run of tall, rangy, multi-sport, multi-position athletes on the list continues here as the rising junior L.C. Bird prospect earned all-district honors as a sophomore in 2008 as a defensive back and will step in as the Skyhawks quarterback this season after seeing some time at wide receiver last year. As the program enters the 2009 season looking for their ninth straight Dominion District championship, a good portion of the load will fall on Harris' shoulders but it's a burden that he is likely prepared to accept as some onlookers have opined that the Class of 2011 player could be as athletic as any player to have come through the Bird system.
11Daquan Romero
Hampton (VA) Phoebus
  DE6-2/205list
Romero, DaquanA VirginiaPreps.com first team all-state selection at tight end in 2008, Romero is even more of a standout and prospect on the defensive side of the ball where he started fifteen games for the reigning Division Five champion Phoebus Phantoms. The addition of fifteen pounds in the offseason should add to his strength while not limiting his explosiveness off the ball, a key strength in his game. A big game playmaker on both sides of the ball, a move to linebacker may be in his future on the college level, though a small growth spurt could change that. A few things that recruiters will not have to worry about is his competitive nature, aggressiveness on the field and willingness to be a team leader, even to older players.
12Travis Hughes
Virginia Beach (VA) Kempsville
  LB6-1/214list
Hughes, TravisWith four unofficial verbal offers in hand and several more colleges from coast-to-coast entering the fray for his services, the rising 2011 prospect from Kempsville will be a hot commodity from the Commonwealth next season. With impressive showings at camps and combines throughout the Spring and Summer, including gathering the linebackers MVP award at the Ultimate 100 camp in New Jersey, Hughes is a giant blip on the recruiting radar screen right now and will continue to grow over the next two years. With elder brother Trenton a defensive back at Maryland, Travis will have the luxury of having experienced voices in his ears throughout the process.
13Corey Marshall
Dinwiddie (VA) Dinwiddie
  DE6-1/254list
Marshall, CoreyWith offers already in from both in-state DI programs, Marshall has been discovered by the locals and will soon be well known to college recruiters up and down the East Coast. In his sophomore season, the Class of 2011 prospect was the top defensive player for a Dinwiddie as he recorded 127 tackles, 12 sacks, one interception and five pass break ups for a program which finished 12-2 as the Division Five state runners up. Marshall brings tremendous power to the field with his 300-plus pound bench and 500-plus pound squat but plays with great quickness as well having recorded a 4.84 forty and 4.41 shuttle. In early September, expect a lot of articles about offers coming in for this rising junior.
14Rashad Hall
Forest (VA) Jefferson Forest
  RB6-0/187list

As the #2 tailback on the Jefferson Forest roster last season, Hall rushed for over 800 yards in helping the Cavaliers reach the postseason and notch a 9-4 record. Already on radar screens after that performance, Hall solidified his ranking as a top prospect by running a 4.34 forty at the May VirginiaPreps.com combine while also recording a 4.2 shuttle, 29.9-inch vertical and showing nice strength on the bench with 15 reps at 185 pounds. With blazing speed, Hall need only add a little bit more size and handle the role of being "the man" in the running game before seeing his recruiting explode as colleges throughout the mid-Atlantic flock to see him.
15David Dean
Virginia Beach (VA) Green Run
  DT6-1/270list

Anyone in the recruiting hunt for Dinwiddie's Corey Marshall will be taking a strong look at Green Run's David Dean and they certainly won't feel as though he is a consolation prize because the Stallions rising junior is near prototypical size for a defensive tackle though an inch or two more height would help him down the road. As he matures, expect his speed to improve which will only make him a more dangerous player than he already is. With a DI offer in hand already (Louisville), the second team Beach District lineman will have a busy September as colleges will start lining up in the race to secure his commitment.
16Demetrious Nicholson
Virginia Beach (VA) Bayside
  DB5-9/160list
Nicholson, DemetriousNorth Carolina was the first of many offers which will land in front of the Bayside defensive back who has a great hip flip and is tremendously gifted at staying in the hip pocket of wide receivers. His ability to battle for the ball in the air will make him one of the most highly-recruited players from the 2011 Class because he is a true shutdown corner. His performance at the Ultimate 100 camp in New Jersey earned praise from Rivals analyst Mike Farrell who noted that "Trey" is "a very smooth defensive back who has great ball skills and breaks on the ball well. Nicholson is good enough to allow a slight cushion between himself and his opponent to give the appearance of separation, but then he'll close and make a play on the ball. He's also very good at peeling off his man and getting into the play when the ball isn't thrown at him."
17Matt Zanellato
Fairfax (VA) Robinson
  WR6-3/180list

Bringing basketball skills to the wide receiver position, Matt Zanellato is a true outside-the-hashes athlete with great height and playmaking ability having caught 21 passes for 346 yards and two scores in 2008 as a sophomore, earning him second team all-region honors. Robinson Coach Marc Bendorf says that his rising junior is an "athlete, there's no doubt about, and he really came into his own the second half of this past season." He'll likely step up more as a go-to guy in the Rams offense over the course of the next two seasons and should add both more size and strength which should result in plenty of college attention.
18Chris Hall
Dinwiddie (VA) Dinwiddie
  QB6-4/222list
Hall, ChrisStepping behind center for the Dinwiddie Generals, Hall will plenty of opportunities to show off his playmaking ability in Coach Billy Mills' exciting offense. The rising junior brings outstanding size to the quarterback position and exceptional athleticism having played wide receiver during the program's 2008 season in which they made a run to the state championship game. He throws a great ball and, as his mechanics and strength improve, as well as his ability to read the field, Hall should grow into an elite dual threat playmaking signal caller capable of leading Dinwiddie deep into the playoffs. Good news for Virginia Tech fans, the Class of 2011 prospect has called them his early leader, but they will have to fight off lots of challengers.
19Quintae Funderburke
Chesapeake (VA) Oscar Smith
  WR6-2/180list

After sending six wide receivers to Division I or DI-AA schools since 2006 including four in the last two seasons, the Oscar Smith Tigers football program has a proven track record of producing top-of-the-line wideouts and rising junior Quintae Funderburke may be the most physically impressive of all of them. With great height, impressive hands and route-running ability, the Class of 2011 playmaker is going to be the top target for the nation's #1-ranked quarterback, Phillip Sims, this season so there will be plenty of opportunities to prove his play-making ability. An opening game schedule which includes a game televised on ESPN means national exposure for the big man which could result in him being nationally recruited.
20Iric Harris
Woodbridge (VA) C. D. Hylton
  DB5-8/165list
Harris, IricFew players in the Commonwealth have garnered as much attention as Hylton's Harris over the course of the summer. A starter for the Bulldogs his sophomore season, the rising junior will be a staple of their secondary for the next two seasons and could be an all-state staple as well due to his blazing speed, coverage skills and confidence in his ability to lock down opposing wideouts. The Class of 2011 prospect earned the overall MVP honors at the Ultimate 100 camp in New Jersey where he was described by Rivals analyst Mike Farrell as a "dynamic cover cornerback who can lock down in single coverage because he has great hips, reads and reacts to routes well and changes direction with ease. He also has the confidence and cockiness of a shutdown corner who wants to go against the best and doesn't back down from a challenge. Harris won the Overall MVP at the event for good reason and he will be heavily recruited next year."
