The L. C. Bird Skyhawks just picked up the only trophy that had eluded them in their storied history.
The Skyhawks cemented their already-impressive football legacy with a 14-10 victory over Ocean Lakes in the Group AAA, Division Six championship. Faced with the daunting task of slowing perhaps the best defensive line in the state, Bird managed to keep Paul Robertson's incredible playoff run going by controlling the line of scrimmage for much of the game. Robertson finished with 180 yards and both of Bird's touchdowns.
The Skyhawks coupled that offensive performance with a gutty defensive showing. Bird allowed just three points after an opening-play touchdown on a 77-yard Andre Dessenberg double-pass to Anthony Walters. The Skyhawks allowed the Dolphins to gain 307 yards of net offense, but toughened up when their backs were near the goal line, preventing any further points after a second-quarter field goal by Tyler Buie.
The win caps a perfect season for Bird, as this Skyhawks squad became the first in school history to go 12-0, 13-0, and, finally, 14-0. We'll have full coverage of this game, including post-game press conferences, analysis, and more tomorrow.
