The Fifth Annual VirginiaPreps.com Classic Basketball Showcase took place at Virginia Wesleyan College as event organizer Matthew Hatfield lined up a day of spectacular contests.

Granby Comets 48, Salem Sundevils 46

Granby jumped out to an 11-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and held off a late charge from Salem to win their ninth game of the season despite the fact that they fielded a team with only six players.

Willie White led the way for the Comets scoring 21 points with support from both Laguna Foster and Aaron Meredith who each chipped in with 13 points on the day.

Granby scored a 48-30 advantage on the boards with Foster leading the way with 13 rebounds with Meredith and Sidney
Fulford adding eight apiece.  Richard Morris led the way for Salem wtih 13 points.


Great Bridge Wildcats 59, Tallwood Lions 47

A 15-8 first quarter advantage paved the way for the Great Bridge victory as the Wildcats won their tenth game in eleven tries this season.

Heading  up the Wildcats' scoring was guard Marcus Evans who totaled 22 points on 10 of 16 shooting including one three-pointer.  Evans was backed by Mark Madison who connected on three of six attempts in totaling 10 points.

The Great Bridge defense was the difference in the contest as the 'Cats limited Tallwood to 18 of 47 shooting (38.3%).  The defense not only limited Tallwood to 8 points in the first quarter but also held them to 10 in the final stanza to collect the win.

Tallwood was paced by Tyler Peterson who totaled 19 points with support from Tommie Flournoy who added 15 for the Lions.


Christchurch Seahorses 69, Phoebus Phantoms 63

Trailing by nine points entering the fourth quarter, Christchurch outscored Phoebus 23-8 in the fourth quarter to collect the victory and up their mark to 9-4 on the season.

Seahorses standout Devin Robinson posted a triple-double in the win totaling 19 points, 13 rebounds and
10 blocks hitting on 7 of 16 shot attempts including two three-pointers.  He was joined by Brendan Cole who put up 24 points on 9 of 16 shooting adding five assists, two blocks and a steal.

The key to the Christchurch win was their defense down the stretch as they held the Phantoms without a field goal in the game's final 3:22 in overcoming what was, at one point, a 17-point Phoebus advantage.

Pacing the Phantoms' attack was Josh Davis and James Daniel who connected for 23 and 22 points, respectively.  Davis hauled in 16 rebounds to lead the team on the boards, as well.


Kellam Knights 56, Battlefield Bobcats 53

Trailing by ten points at halftime, Kellam outscored Battlefield 39-26 in the second quarter to record a three-point win, their tenth victory of the season against only two losses.

The Knights got 21 points and 16 rebounds out of Old Dominin commit Ramone Snowden who scored 13
from the field and 8 from the line in the victory.  The Kellam senior also was the game's assist leader notching 6 dimes in the win.  Complementing Snowden's efforts was Kobe Copeland who scored 12 points and Chris Smith who pulled in 8 rebounds.

After shooting only 38.9% in the first two quarters, Kellam showed a hot-shooting hand after halftime hitting on 13 of 25 shots (52.0%) to spark their come-from-behind win and the Knights' depth played a factor in the contest as their bench outscored the Bobcats' reserves 11-3 in the contest.

Battlefield placed a trio of players in double digits including Trevor Blondin (18), Jamison Glover (12) and Kameron
Hedgepeth (10).


Landstown Eagles 49, Stonewall Jackson Raiders 44

Jumping out to a 6-point lead at the end of the first quarter, then extending their advantage to 9 points at the half, Landstown held off a Stonewall Jackson comeback securing their eighth win of the season with a five-point victory.

Cameron Alston led the Eagles offensive attack with 17 points and six rebounds as he connected on 7 of his 14
shot attempts on the night.  Roderick Nicholson was the only other Eagle to score into double digits as he knocked down 4 of 9 attempts for 10 points.  Along the boards, Landstown got eight boards from Jordan Roberson and six each from Alston, Nicholson and Sebastian Sandifer.

The Eagles formula for winning this contest was built upon their ability to create points in the paint and off turnovers as
Landstown outscored Stonewall 28-12 inside then added a 13-5 advantage off turnovers to account for their victory.

Stonewall was paced by Mustafa Ali whose 11 points made him the only scorer on the roster to reach double digits against the Landstown pressure.


Cape Henry 66, Miller School 55

Using a strong second half that saw Cape Henry outscore Miller School 36-17, the Dolphins improved their record to 10-1 on the season as they rebounded from an eight-point halftime deficit.

Pacing the balanced Cape Henry attack was guard Jimmy Paige who scored 18 points with support from Chris Clarke and UVA signee Devon Hall who each totaled 15 while Ayron Hutton pitched in with 11.  Clarke and Paige led the way on the boards as well collecting 13 and 12 rebounds apiece while Hall dished out six dimes.

After allowing Miller School to hit on 15 of 28 shots in the opening half, the Cape Henry defense clamped down in the
second half limiting Miller to only 6 of 20 shooting (30.0%) while also pounding the boards producing a 44-28 rebounding advantage.

Franklin Porter led the Miller attack with 19 points while Travis Hester totaled 16 and Isaac Copeland chipped in 14.


Maury Commodores 42, T.C. Williams 37

In notching their eleventh win in twelve games, the Maury Commodores outscored the T. C. Williams Titans in three of the four quarters reulting in the five-point victory.

Leading  the way for the Commodores was Jalon Williams who put up 13 points connecting on 5 of 12 shots with two three-pointers while guard Mike Basnight chipped in 10 points in support.  Jaleel Ferguson cleaned the boards with a
team-high 7 rebounds while Basnight dished out six assists.

The difference in the game came in the points off turnovers contest as T.C. Williams generated 12 points off Maury mistakes but the Commodores capitalized on Titans' 18 errors to the tune of 20 points.  Additionally, the Maury defense turned up the pressure at the end of the contest not allowing the Titans a bucket in the game's final two minutes.

Heading up the T.C. attack was Malik Carney who totaled 10 points and a team-leading 7 rebounds while every other player on the team was limited to six points or less.


Kecoughtan Warriors 68, L.C. Bird Skyhawks 52

A third quarter 30-17 burst by the Kecoughtan Warriors helped them blow open what was a one-point game at the halftime and allowed them to cruise to their ninth win in eleven games this season as they topped L.C. Bird by 16 points on the night in the Classic's next-to-last contest.

Rajay Bullock, a Providence commit, dominated the contest totaling 31 points (a new VirginiaPreps Classic record) and 16 rebounds hitting 12 of 22 shots and adding four blocks and three assists for the Warriors.  In support, East Carolina commit Greg Alexander hit a trio of three-pointers and hit on 7 of 17 shots in scoring 18 points.

Along with Bullock's dominance, Kecoughtan put together a big shooting night hitting on 27 of 55 shots (49.1%) while limiting Bird's opportunities as the Skyhawks shot only 37.0% on 20 of 54 attempts.  In addition, the Warriors topped
the Skyhawks 16-4 on fast break points as their breakout buckets set the tone in the second half.

L.C. Bird was paced by Kenny Williams who totaled 17 points on 6 of 15 shooting including a trio of
three-pointers.  No other Skyhawks player scored into double digits but Thomas Taylor pulled 10 rebounds and rattled the rims with a couple dunks.


Green Run Stallions 63, Petersburg Crimson Wave 51

A 19-8 fourth quarter advantage helped the Green Run Stallions secure a 12-point victory over visiting Petersburg as they broke open a close contest in the final stanza.

Leading the Stallions' attack was the two-headed monster of Keon Buchanan and Tyler Blount who scored 18
points apiece in the victory.  Chipping with the 12 points off the bench was Kevin Holmes.  Buchanan also lead the way on the boards collecting 10 rebounds while point guard Lequan Thomas notched eight steals (a new VirginiaPreps Classic record).

The key to victory was Green Run's defense in the second half as they limited Petersburg to only twelve shots after halftime and the Wave only connected on three (25.0%) as 13 of their 19 second half points came from the free throw line.  Meanwhile, Green Run hit 9 of their 24 shots including four three-pointers to pull away down the stretch.

Heading up the Wave's offensive attack, Gevon Arrington totaled 15 points while Quadree Walker added 7 points to go along with his 11 rebounds.
