Hampton 3 Menchville 0

Junior Steve Hux threw a complete game shutout and the Hampton Crabbers defeated the Menchville Monarchs 3-0 in a first place showdown at Hampton High School. The Crabbers took a 1-game lead in the Peninsula District race with two to play. The regular season champion receives an automatic bid to the Eastern Region playoffs. Hampton last appearance in the Region was in 2008.

The win gives Hampton a sweep of the season series.

Hux, the odds-on-favorite to win the Peninsula District Player of the Year award, scattered three singles while pitching his way out of several jams. On three occasions, the Monarchs loaded the bases only to be denied by Hux and the Crabber defense. Hux hit three batters and walked four, but the Monarchs couldn't capitalize stranding 11 batters on-base.

Meanwhile, Hampton plated three runners across the plate in the bottom of the third to account for all of their scoring. Kevin Matthews led off the inning with a walk and reached third on a sacrifice bunt and a fielding error by the shortstop, Hux helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Matthews. Another error on an infield grounder ended up in the outfield allowing Darius Harris and Hux to score for a 3-0 lead.

Notables

Menchville starter Garrett Chrismon, who is headed to Christopher Newport in the fall, wentfive innings allowing three hits and one earned run. He recorded six strikeouts. Monarch senior right-fielder Jordan Wright made a great running catch in the outfield. Hampton outfielder Darius Harris caught a ball at the fence that looked as if it would clear the fence.
