Senior Carlos Contreras walk off single with the base loaded broke a scoreless tie and gave the Hampton Crabbers a 1-0 win over the Warwick Raiders in the Peninsula District quarterfinals.

The game turned into a pitchers dual between Warwick pitcher Dylan Rose and Hampton starter Kevin Matthews as both starters pitched six scoreless innings and both threw complete games with Matthews throwing a shutout..

"It was a tough game for either team to lose," Hampton head coach Danny Mitchell said. "I can't say enough for the way Warwick played."

Matthews had defeated Warwick during the regular season and his breaking ball was dominant in his second encounter. Matthews had only one strikeout but he forced 10 fly ball outs and two pop outs. Warwick had their chances to score leaving eight players on base after collecting five hits, drawing two walks, and having two batters hit by pitches.

Hampton only had one hit off of Rose heading into the seventh before Cody Seals and Patrick Kyle started the inning with singles. John Jackowski lifted a fly ball to center field that was dropped when the two outfielders ran into each other. Contreras, who had the only Crabber hit before the seventh, laced a single to left field scoring seals and extending Hampton's season.

Rose did his best to keep Hampton off the scoreboard with four hitless innings before a Contreras double in the fifth gave Hampton their first hit. Rose ended the inning with two strikeouts. Prior to the double, the Crabbers only baserunner came via a passed ball after Rose had struckout Yusef Davis.

The Crabbers will now face Woodside who defeated Bethel 16-0 in their quarterfinal game. The Wolverines defeated Hampton in both meetings during the regular season. The Crabbers defeated Menchville twice during the season but had to play a 1-game playoff to determine the automatic seed. Menchville defeated Hampton to earn the automatic Region bid. Some thought Hampton should have been declared the champs however district rules state otherwise.

"We are not going to cry about it," Mitchell said about not receiving the automatic bid. "We feel if you beat a team twice then that proves you are the better team. We just have to focus on winning our remaining games."
