Not only has Division Six not seen a repeat champion since C.D. Hylton won back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999 but also, the state's top classfication has not seen back-to-back winners from the same region since Centreville won in 2000 and Robinson followed them in 2001.

Can the defending champions repeat? Can someone else from the Eastern Region rise up? Is there a sleeper team out there who can complete an unlikely postseason run?

Here are the likely candidates...

8. thomas dale knights

Why they are ranked: The 2009 Division Six state champions stumbled to a 5-5 record the following season but bounced back last year with a 7-4 mark with their only losses coming to powerhouse Central Region teams L.C. Bird (twice), Varina and Hermitage. The cupboard is stacked with talent this season though led by running back D.J. Reid, a BCS-level talent who will run behind an outstanding offensive line powered by Zack Rhodes. On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker C.J. Reavis is a potential dominating force capable of changing the complex of a game on any play. A schedule filled with L.C. Bird (twice), Varina, Dinwiddie and Meadowbrook is fraught with potential disaster but Coach Kevin Tucker and company have enough to power through it.
Concerns: With only four teams making the postseason in the Central Region, one slip up could be fatal to the Knights' playoff hopes so they will have to be on top of their game for fourteen games and that's tough to do with high school kids.

9. bayside marlins

Why they are ranked: The 2010 Eastern Region Division Six champions, Bayside still carries major players from that roster on this year's team and the group has compiled a 32-6 mark over the course of the past three seasons. Running back Taquan Mizzell ranks among the best in the nation, do-it-all athlete Quin Blanding is a strong contender for Rivals.com five-star status when the rankings are released for the Class of 2014 and quarterback Deion Stitt is a four-year starter for Coach Darnell Moore. The pieces are in place for a deep postseason run. Battles with Salem and Ocean Lakes within the first four weeks of the season will expose any weaknesses and give Moore and company six weeks to correct them before entering the playoffs.
Concerns: The Marlins were bested twice by a Salem team returning a boatload of talent and a nationally-ranked Oscr Smith team will loom in the bracket somewhere along the line.

10. lake braddock bruins

Why they are ranked: The back-to-back Northern Region champions in 2009 and 2010, the Bruins were ousted in the regional semifinals last season by eventual regional champion Centreville 21-18 as Coach Jim Poythress and company finished the season with a 7-5 mark. Quarterback Caleb Henderson was the regional player of the year on offense last season (named by VirginiaPreps.com) and he'll head up what should be an explosive offense paired with a solid defense led by defensive linemen Dean Doe and Romario Peart. They'll meet Centreville in their first game and Westfield in their third so Poythress will have their attention through August workouts as they will need to be ready for big showdowns early.
Concerns:As always, the concerns for any team in the Northern Region are the programs in the Concorde District who will litter the Division Six bracket. Can Lake Braddock climb a mountain that may include meeting three Concorde teams in consecutive weeks in the playoffs? Recent history says that, with the right talent, Lake Braddock can reach the top.
