Recruiting a YOLO world
You Oughtta Look Out--because a coaching staff has to look two to three years in the future, projecting needs and player development. And, with limited scholarships (24 this recruiting class due to NCAA sanctions, 84 total) and limited official visits (37 for the next three seasons, again, due to sanctions) the staff has to be extremely judicious and selective about who they offer and who they invite for an official visit.
Fortunately, the Oregon coaching staff excels at talent evaluation, identifying stars like Marcus Mariota, LaMichael James and Jeff Maehl long before the recruiting services and rival coaching staffs recognized their potential.
You Only Live Once--because scholarships are so precious, and a team needs depth and balance, every offer, every visit, every decision about a player's talent and how he will fit into the team is crucial. Finding guys who are fast and athletic isn't enough. Yesterday at the Oregon Media Day Mark Helfrich told reporters,
"Our first two things when we talk about recruits are character and attitude, and that can never change, and will never change."
