Hokies put out new offer
It didn't take long following junior day for the Hokies to put one more scholarship on the table. Who's the latest prospect to pull an offer from Virginia Tech?
"I got the greyshirt offer from Tech today," Midlothian (Va.) Manchester offensive tackle Jake Goins said. "I called their coaches today and they told me that the greyshirt meant I'd have to sit out my first semester and join them in the spring. Then, I could go through spring ball.
"It's a good thing to go for five and a half years. I kind of like that, but I've got to see what comes my way. I think I know a player from Varina that did the greyshirt and it went well, but I'm still trying to figure it out."
The offer from Tech comes following a visit by Goins to Blacksburg last weekend for Virginia Tech's junior day.
"I liked the visit, it went pretty well," he said. "I got up there and they showed us around the facilities, the academic facilities, weight room and told us more about the program.
"I got to see the facilities inside the stadium and they did a Q&A with the players. They broke us up by position as well and I got to talk more with Blake DeChristopher and another player. That was kind of college getting his insight and player feedback."
Of course, the junior day wouldn't be complete without lots of time with the coaching staff.
"They were there the entire time and I talked to all of the coaches," he said. "I talked with Coach Newsome, Cavanaugh, Foster, Beamer and all the others. I met them all. Coach Beamer asked how my trip was going and if I enjoyed it."
Goins was joined on the trip by his mother and grandfather as well.
"They both liked it as well."
The lineman claims he is intrigued by Tech, but is far from a decision.
"I'm liking what I'm seeing from them, but my options are open," he said. "I plan to go this weekend to Virginia for a junior day. I want to see what's going on there."
